Sergeant Gene Fontanilla

New information at the bottom of the page.

Sergeant Gene Fontanilla is our 2nd grade teacher's husband.  He has been in the Army Reserves for almost 25 years and has now volunteered to go to Iraq.  We are so proud of him and are thankful that he is willing to fight for our country.

On April 16, 2008 we had a prayer ceremony here at  school.  Gene spoke to the students, teachers, and parents about his new journey.  We all prayed together for him and all the troops.  We then went outside and tied yellow ribbons and American flags to our front fence.  This is a reminder for all of us to be praying for the Fontanilla family as well as all of our soldiers and their families.

Something Gene shared at our prayer ceremony is included below.  It was written by Father Denis Edward O'Brien.
It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, not the organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.
It is the soldier, who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag,
and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protestor to burn the flag.
The Fontanilla Family:  Gene, Karen, Kolbe, Alysha, & Melanie.

Letter from Gene May 5, 2008

Gene Fontanilla is now on Oahu.  As most of you know, he had a heart attack in Iraq and was transferred to Germany, Maryland, and then Oahu.  Where is goes next is in God's hands.  We continue praying for him, his family, and all the other men and women who are still overseas.
